He received his initial art education in Amiens, then was a student of the French landscape painter Leon Cogniet in Paris and first appeared before the public at the Paris World Exhibition of 1855 with a male portrait.
In 1861, he received the main Rome Prize for his painting "The Death of Priam", after which he painted in Rome: "Young Man Painting a Tragic Mask", "The Daughter's Love of a Roman Woman" (1864), "Pilgrimage to the Sacro Spaco Monastery, Near Subiaco" (1865), "Sleeping Young Girl" (1865), "Nymph and Bacchus Child" (1866) and "Pope Pius IX in the Cathedral of St. Peter" (1867).
Returning to Paris, he soon took a very prominent place among French artists as a pleasant colorist and an elegant, although somewhat mannered draftsman, especially skilled in depicting female beauty and in portraits.
The best works he has completed since his arrival from Rome are:
"Truth", a figure of a naked young woman holding a radiant sphere over her head (1870; in the Musée d'Orsay), "Dragonfly" (1872), "Pandora" (1877), "Mignon" (1878), "Diana with Nymphs Surprised While Bathing" (1879), "Fiametta" (1881), "Undine" (1881), as well as portraits of the imperial prince (1874), Viscountess Montesquieu, "Mary Magdalene in the Grotto" and others.
