🖼️ "Madame Le Fevre de Caumartin as Hebe"
1753
Oil on canvas
National Gallery of Art
Washington
The painting depicts Madame Le Fevre de Caumartin, a famous lady of her time, in the guise of Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth and cupbearer of the gods. In Greek mythology, Hebe (Greek: "Ήβη) is the goddess of youth. Hebe was the goddess of youth and the cupbearer of the gods, the patron goddess of the young bride and the companion of the goddess Aphrodite.
The young woman is dressed in flowing white clothes with blue drapery falling around her. Her hair is decorated with flowers, and there is an elegant floral arrangement on her bodice. The woman poses gracefully, holding a silver jug in one hand and a shallow bowl in the other, as if about to pour a drink. Next to her, an eagle, a symbol often associated with Zeus, sits with half-spread wings. In the background, the sky is depicted with soft colors, creating a serene and unearthly atmosphere.
