🖌️🎨 Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931)

🖌️🎨 Giovanni Boldini (Italian: Giovanni Boldini; 1842-1931) - Italian artist of the #decadence era.

He painted landscapes, everyday paintings, portraits. One of the best among the famous portrait painters at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

He was born in Ferrara, in the family of a little-known provincial artist. He was the eighth child in a family of thirteen children.
He received his first artistic skills in his father's workshop. Since 1858, he began attending painting courses with the artist Ieronime Domenichini (1813-1891). Domenichini also accepted orders for decorative murals and, together with his own father, was the author of the scenery for the local theater.
In 1862, he moved to Florence to receive an art education (supervisor - Stephen Uzzi, 1822-1901). Studied the then realistic painting of the Macchiaoli group in the capital of Tuscany. Their influence is noticeable in Boldini's landscapes, because the landscape genre experienced a real, powerful blossoming in the 19th century. The fast, sketchy manner of painting, which was so opposed to the smoothed-out and deadened manner of academicism, became widespread.
Boldini took from academicism high technical skills, virtuoso execution and interest in salon art, one of the pillars of which he himself would become. Had great financial success.
Giovanni Boldini did not become a landscape painter, nor a fan of the genre of everyday life, with which he began. And after working in London, where he received great success as a portraitist, he moved on to creating commissioned portraits.
In 1872, Boldini moved to Paris. He opened his own workshop on Avenue Frochol, and then moved to a new one on Place Pigalle. He attracted the attention of the famous merchant Adolphe Goupil, to whom he supplied his own paintings of the genre of everyday life. Giovanni Boldini became a fashionable and financially successful artist, like fashionable artists in Paris – Mariano Fortuny, Ernest Meissonier, Giuseppe de Nittis, Giuseppe Palizzi.
Among his Parisian acquaintances and friends were the son of a banker, an aristocrat and impressionist artist Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Alfred Sisley. But French impressionism did not affect the artistic style of Giovanni Boldini, whose works are closer to the style of John Sargent or Paul Helle.
The Italian, who had success in Paris, was not forgotten in Rome either. It was he who was entrusted to be the patron of the Italian sector at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
He won the Grand Prix at the World Exhibitions in Paris (1889, 1900).
Among the artist's awards is the Legion of Honor.
Boldini's paintings are present in most of the world's largest museum collections - in the Louvre, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the London National Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, etc.
However, even more of his works are still in private collections - the families of those who commissioned his portraits. It is from there that Boldini's paintings occasionally appear on the pages of the catalogs of the largest auction houses around the world.
By the way, this was also the case during the author's lifetime: his paintings were put up for open auction almost from the easel.
Here is such an extraordinary #artist, Giovanni Boldini, who left his bright mark on art and took with him the mystery of his talent and life.
