He was the son of a landowner. In 1869, he went to Munich and received his formal education under Hermann Dieck, Hermann Anschütz, and Johann Georg Hiltensperger at the Munich Academy.
Here he honed his skill in drawing the human figure and began to specialize in portraiture and genre painting. During his lifetime, he was noted for his finely detailed miniature portrait paintings, often depicting the head of a Tyrolean gentleman. However, he also painted a number of "true" genre paintings.

Paul de La Boulaye was the son of Eugène Georgette du Buisson de La Boulaye (1810-1888) and Adrienne de Grandorge d'Orgeville de Mesnil-Duran (1811-1859). His paternal grandfather, Jean Baptiste Georgette du Buisson (1781-1856), Vicomte de La Boulaye, was Secretary General of the Royal Household and then an active member of the civil list and deputy at the Restoration; Louis XVIII created him a hereditary viscount on January 8, 1820.
