🖌️🎨 Georg Flegel (1566-1638)

🖌️🎨 Georg Flegel (1566-1638) - German artist, founder of the German school of still life.
Painting style: Baroque.
He is considered the first German artist to paint still lifes and one of the greatest European masters of this genre at the beginning of the 17th century.
Georg Flegel specialized in still lifes depicting table scenes with an abundance of food, tableware and flowers.
Flegel was born in Olmütz (Olomouc, Moravia). Around 1580, he moved to Vienna, where he worked as an assistant to Lucas van Valckenborch, a painter and draftsman.
Flegel was a student of Lucas van Valckenborch in Linz from 1582 to 1592.
Later he moved to Frankfurt, which at that time was an important city for the art trade. As an assistant, he inserted objects such as fruit, flowers, and cutlery into Falckenborch's works.
He was probably acquainted with other still life artists working there during this period, such as Roelandt Savery and Balthasar van der Ast.
Over the course of about 30 years (c. 1600–1630), Flegel produced 110 paintings in watercolor and oil, mostly still lifes, which often depicted tables set for a meal and covered with food, flowers, and sometimes animals. His students included his own two sons, Friedrich (1596/1597–1616) and Jacob (probably Leonhard, 1602–1623), and the flower painter Jacob Marrel.
Georg Flegel died in 1638 in Frankfurt am Main.
