🖌️🎨Nadia Waheed (b. 1992, Saudi Arabia) received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited in New York, Miami, San Francisco, Toronto, Sydney, and Chicago.
The artist paints vibrant, almost religious portraits of South Asian women.
The surreal canvases depict muscular, nude female figures, often rendered in grays and browns, set amidst vast, dreamlike landscapes filled with water lilies, dense forest flora, and endless expanses of water.
Wahid paints characters struggling to find peace and clarity in their often turbulent environments.
Her work draws on religious and mythological themes, including the Christian concept of kenosis (emptying oneself to allow the divine to enter), the Buddhist notion of spiritual emptiness shunyata, and the two-faced Janus.
