 🖌️🎨 Julius Schnoor von Carolsfeld (1794-1872) was a German artist of the Romantic era.
He was born into the family of the artist Johann Veit Schnoor von Carolsfeld, who became his son's first teacher.
Having received excellent training, Julius entered the Vienna Academy of Arts at the age of seventeen, where he studied old works by Italian and German masters with great diligence.
At the academy, Schnoor joined the "Union of St. Luke" group. The group united young artists, nicknamed "Nazarenes", who sought to revive the religious spirit in German art, relying on the old masters.
In 1817, the young artist went to Italy, where he worked for almost ten years. In Rome, he painted frescoes in the hall of the villa of the Marquis Massima, these were twenty-three scenes from Ludovico Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso".
In addition, Julius Schnorr painted a lot in oil: these were paintings with religious subjects, and about a hundred landscape sketches. In his works, one can feel an extraordinary gift for composition and a feeling arises as if the author himself lives the plots of his works.
Later, living in Dresden, the artist devoted himself entirely to religious art.
The most important work of Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld is the Bible in pictures (German: Die Bibel in Bildern).
This edition was published in 1852-1860 in Leipzig and brought the artist considerable popularity not only in all regions of Germany, but also in other countries.
The book contains 240 drawings engraved on wood. Each composition has its own value, but many of them, especially those dealing with the Old Testament, are incomparable in their kind.
