🖌️🎨 Gabriel Metsu (1629 - 1667) - Dutch artist, master of genre, portrait and historical painting.
Son of the artist Jacques Metsu (1588 - 1629). Received his first drawing lessons from his parents. Continued his art education with Nikolaus Knupfer in Utrecht, and also studied with Jan Weenix.
Most likely, he was baptized in a Catholic hidden church, but records of baptism have not survived.
Until 1657, he lived almost without interruption in Leiden, where in 1648 he became one of the founders of the Guild of St. Luke.
Around 1655, he moved to Amsterdam, lived in an alley on Prinsengracht, next to a brewery and next to his relative Philips Metsu.
In 1658 he married Isabella de Wolff, the daughter of the potter and artist Maria de Grebber.
His early works on historical themes reflect mainly mythological, allegorical and biblical subjects and are influenced by the school of Rembrandt.
In his works after 1650, Metsu turns to urban and genre scenes from the everyday life of Dutch citizens. In these works, he improves the drawing style of Jan Steen, Jan Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch, giving it an expression of deeper sensuality and at the same time a calmer mood.
At the end of his life, under the influence of the Leiden school of painting, he attaches great importance to the mastery of detail, especially in the depiction of luxurious fabrics, which at the same time had to look smooth and shiny.
