was an American artist.
He was born on June 19, 1783 in the United Kingdom to actors Matthew and Sarah Sully.
In March 1792, the entire family, which included nine children, emigrated to Charleston, South Carolina, USA, where Thomas's uncle ran a theater.
At the age of 12, he studied painting with his half-brother, a French miniaturist. He became a professional artist in 1801. He studied portrait painting with Gilbert Stuart in Boston.
After some time, Sully moved to New York with his brother from Virginia, after which in 1806 he moved to Philadelphia (where he lived until the end of his life). In 1809, Sully went to London to study with Benjamin West.
Since 1801, Thomas Sully has created 2,631 paintings, most of which are currently in the United States. Although Sully is best known as a portrait artist, he also painted historical and landscape paintings.
He died on November 5, 1872, in Philadelphia and is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
