🖌️🎨Ernest Bieler (1863 - 1948) - Swiss artist and illustrator, representative of such movements as impressionism and art nouveau. An outstanding master of portraiture.
In 1880, after graduating from high school in Lausanne, E. Bieler, on the advice of François Bosson, who discovered his artistic talent, left for Paris, where his relatives lived.
Here he studied painting at the Académie Julian and the Académie Suisse. At that time, the young artist earned his living by illustrating the works of E. Zola, V. Hugo and A. Daudet.
The artist's main creative interest was aroused by the landscapes and human characters of his native Switzerland, primarily the canton of Valais.
In 1889, he returned to his homeland and settled in Saviez, near Sion. Together with other artists living here, he created the so-called Saviege school of painting, which dedicated its works to the nature and people of the canton of Valais.
E. Bieler's creative interests were very diverse - he painted in oil, watercolors, was fond of fresco painting, was engaged in glass painting, and created mosaics.
In 1926 and 1927 he was a member of the Swiss Art Commission. Beginning in 1917, the artist was also seriously interested in winemaking in the Lavaux region.
His scenes from peasant life with a remarkable level of detail, executed in his famous technique "Saviège style", received especially high recognition.
The term is worth mentioning separately. Saviege is a mountain village in the canton of Valais. The beautiful landscapes of this village and the people, who seemed to have been bypassed by civilization, had a very strong effect on the artist, touching the very depths of the heart.
The Saviege style is an image of the dream of the unchanging peasants of Switzerland.
