🗿 Louis Sussmann-Hellborn (1828-1908) was a German sculptor, artist, and collector. Marble "Sleeping Beauty" (German: "Dornröschen") 1878 Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin The name of Hellborn's sculpture seems to have been lost in history, but in 1878, when he created this piece, he was in fact an established artist and a prominent figure in Berlin, with enough money to sponsor the arts (he was one of the founders of the Royal Museum of Decorative Arts) and to create large marble sculptures like this one. The sweet image of Sleeping Beauty, surrounded by delicate branches of roses, rests in a luxurious marble chair, where the German sculptor Louis-Sussmann Hellborn placed her more than a hundred years ago. A metal spindle stands out at the girl's feet, reminding us that it was this that led her to this terrible fate. She studied painting on her own. Here is how Veneta tells about herself: "There was only one decent art school in Sofia. I really wanted to go there. I got a "C" on the first exam, decided that I wouldn't get in anyway at this rate, and helped all my "competitors" during the watercolor exam - I painted their works. By the way, I passed the watercolor exam with flying colors. But I was never accepted into the art school. I was upset and gave up drawing for about ten years. 🦪 🇦🇪 Farah Al Qasimi, an Abu Dhabi-based designer and artist, has created an installation of giant rainbow oysters on the seashore, a sonic ode to the sea. Farah Al Qasimi has named it Homesick. The cluster of iridescent oyster shells echoes with the hum of longing along the Abu Dhabi waterfront. The oysters are made from machined aluminum, coated in shimmering paint, and create a soundscape that evokes the ingrained relationship between the Gulf people and their waters. “Homesick honors the pearl diving tradition that has shaped the economic and cultural landscape of the Emirates,” says the artist. Speakers embedded in each pearl emit a soothing five-channel composition that conveys songs of longing, reimagining the traditional chant sung by pearl divers’ wives to wish for a safe return home.
