Paul Gustav Fischer was the fourth generation of a family that came to Denmark from Poland.
The family was upper-middle class and fairly well off.
Paul's father started out as a painter, but later went into the paint and varnish business.
Fischer's formal art education was short-lived - he spent two years at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in Copenhagen.
Fischer began painting as a young man under the guidance of his father, but it was through his creative contacts with young Danish naturalists that his skill began to grow rapidly.
His early paintings depict city life.
After a stay in Paris from 1891-1895, his color palette became richer and lighter.
Shortly before this, Fischer had become famous as a painter of urban landscapes, depicting not only his native Copenhagen, but also urban scenes from other Scandinavian cities, as well as Italy and Germany.
The apogee of his creative success was between 1890 and 1910. Around this time, he also painted bright and sunny bathing scenes, depicting naked women.
Inspired by Théophile Steinlen and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Fischer showed an interest in the technique of poster painting.
During the period when he was active, Laurits Tuxen dominated Danish fine art.
But despite the lack of widespread recognition during Fischer's lifetime, his art was recognized and his paintings sold well.
