🖌️🎨 Enrique Serra y Auqué (1859-1918) was a romantic landscape painter.
He was born in Barcelona, where he later attended art school.
Thanks to a scholarship, he was able to move to Rome in 1879, where he studied at the Accademia di San Luca. Serra soon established himself as an artist in Rome, achieving his first sales successes and receiving several commissions for the Vatican.
In 1895, he opened a studio in Paris, which became a meeting place for young Spanish artists.
As an illustrator for the Spanish magazine Ilustración Española y Americana, he received further recognition.
In 1888, he was awarded the Gold Medal at the Barcelona World Exhibition.
His work was shown at numerous exhibitions, including the prestigious Sala Parés gallery in Barcelona. Serra y Auke painted views of the Roman countryside, genre compositions and even portraits.
The type of landscape with a lonely, dilapidated chapel or some other ancient building standing in the middle of nature is often found in his work.
Next to his signature, the artist put the place of creation on his paintings: "ROMA" - "Rome".
