Francesco Barzaghi (Barzaghi; Italian. Francesco Barzaghi; 1839-1892) - Italian sculptor of the new school of realists.

Francesco Barzaghi was a virtuoso in working with various materials: marble, stone and bronze. In each of them, he created works filled with realism, but with notes of romance and neoclassicism. His works can also be classified as academic.

He studied at the Brera School of Sculpture and achieved success with his religious and mythological scenes.
The sculptor's fame grew internationally.

For example, he achieved great success in Paris. He focused his career in Italy, where he worked on gender sculpture, portraits and monuments of famous people of the time in his country, such as Garibaldi, Verdi or Hayes.
Barzaghi belonged to the Milanese Zacapigliatura movement: it consisted of young poets, musicians and artists in general who rebelled against traditional culture.

As a sculptor, Barzaghi became one of the most accomplished craftsmen of his generation in the art of stone modeling. He achieved exceptionally fine detail while maintaining the vibrancy and vitality of his anatomy.

He received praise for his sensual marble sculptures of mythological women, which included his Amore Acceca, Silvia che si Specchia, Psyche, La Vanerell, L'Innocennza and Dea dei Fiori.

The sculpture represents a famous biblical story, which tells the story of the pharaoh’s daughter who went to swim in the river with her maids. They noticed a basket on the water with a baby, the son of Jews. She ordered the girls to bring the child to her and, feeling sorry for him, decided to protect him: she took him in as her son.
