White Carrara marble
Cesare Lapini was born in Florence.
He became one of the leading sculptors of his generation, creating works in marble, including allegorical works, copies of antique objects, genre subjects and portrait busts.
Lapini sold them with great success, along with the works of his contemporaries, in his gallery in Florence to travelers participating in the Grand Tour, which, which in the 18th century had been limited to the aristocracy and minor royalty, now included wealthy bourgeois from Britain, Germany, France and the United States.
In 1884 he exhibited a number of sculptures at the Esposizione Generale Italiana di Torino, including "La sorpresa" and "Il primo bacio", which were also exhibited in Rome in 1888.
Lapini was universally admired for the delicacy and sophistication of his technique: the subtle emotionality with which he imbued his figures. He has achieved great success both as a sculptor and as a gallery owner, selling sculptures throughout Europe and the United States.
