🗿Antonio Tantardini (Italian. Antonio Tantardini; 1829-1879) - Italian sculptor, student of Pompeo Mariani.
Known mainly for allegorical female figures.
He worked in the second half of the 19th century, in Milan he attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, the workshop of Pompeo Marchesi.
Trained at a time when Canova's academic approach was at its peak, he was soon captivated by the natural beauty of Lorenzo Bartolini and the naturalism of Giovanni Dupre, and took an interest in the realism of Vincenzo Vela.
The sculptor’s work is associated with the romantic painting of Francesco Ayes - you just have to see one of his masterpieces, “Faust and Margarita” (“The Kiss”).
Tantardini himself was an ardent patriot and participated in the movement against Habsburg rule: “He took up arms and fought for his country, first in 1948 and then in 1859, when he enlisted in Garibaldi’s scouts” (“Roma Artista. Periodico illustrato”) di belle arti ed arte industriale,” abstract V, no. II, March 23, 1879, p. 84).
His works have been exhibited at various international exhibitions.
The sculptor died when he was only 50 years old. His remains rest in the crypt of the memorial chapel in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan.
